UFTON, or U.-Nervet, a parish in Bradfield district, Berks; 2¼ miles E by N of Aldermaston r. station, and 8 WSW of Reading. Post town, Reading. Acres, 2,080. Real property, 2,414. Pop., 367. Houses, 71. The manor, with U. Court, belongs to R. Benyon, Esq. U. Court belonged once to the Perkinses; is described by Pope, in connexion with his “Belinda;” and is now divided into several habitations. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford. Value, £426. Patron, Oriel College, Oxford. The church was rebuilt in 1862. There are an endowed school with £30 a year, two charities, and a fuel allotment £16.

Ufton, or Ufton-Nervet, a parish in the hund. of Theale, union of Bradfield, Berks; 6¼ miles west-south-west of Reading. It was formerly divided into the two parishes of Ufton-Nervet and Ufton-Greyshall, which were consolidated, according to Lyson, in 1442. Of the church of Ufton-Greyshall there are some slight traces yet visible. Living, a rectory in the archd. of Berks and dio. of Oxford; rated at £11 3s. 1½d.; nett value, in 1831, £426. Tithes commuted in 1840; aggregate amount £391. It is in the patronage of Oriel college, Oxford.
There is a daily school here. In 1581, Lady Marvin bequeathed an annual gift to the poor of this parish of 10 bushels of wheat, 12½ ells of canvas, and 12½ yards of narrow blue cloth. The distribution of this bequest is annually made on the 1st of January at Ufton-court. There is also a fuel allotment from the common for behoof of the poor, amounting in value to £15 annually. Acres 2,340. Houses 70. A.P. £2,704. Pop., in 1801, 334; in 1831, 357. Poor rates, in 1838, £149 16s.
