PRESTON (Long), a village, a township, a parish, and a sub-district, in Settle district, W. R. Yorkshire.
The village stands on the river Ribble, and on the Leeds and Lancaster railway, 4 miles S by E of Settle; and has a station on the railway, a post-office under Leeds, and fairs on 1 March, 28 Feb., and 4 Sept.
The township comprises 3, 533 acres. Real property, £5, 364. Pop., 536. Houses, 156.
The parish contains also the townships of Wigglesworth, Hellifield, and West Halton, and comprises 13, 212 acres. Real property, £14, 338. Pop. in 1851, 1, 341; in 1861, 1, 206. Houses, 293. The property is subdivided. The manor belongs to the Duke of Devonshire. Hellifield Peel is the seat of J. Hammerton, Esq.
The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon. Value, £302. Patron, Christchurch, Oxford. The church is old; was recently repaired; and consists of nave, aisles, transept, and chancel, with porch and low tower.
There are-chapels for Baptists and Wesleyans, six church schools, a mechanics’ institute, ten alms-houses, and aggregate charities £206.
