Knottingley, a town, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The town stands on the river Aire, at its junction with the Knottingley and Goole Canal, and on the L. & Y.R., 2½ miles ENE of Pontefract; is a seat of trade and commerce, with three shipbuilding yards, mills, malt works, breweries, bone mills, chemical works, potteries, roperies, brickyards, lime kilns, and extensive lime quarries: and has a station on the railway and a head post office.
Acreage of township, 1481; population, 5425; of the ecclesiastical parishes of St Botolph and Christ Church respectively, 2560½ and 2865.
The living of Knottingley is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £145 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Pontefract. The living of East Knottingley is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £170 with residence. Patrons, alternately the Crown and the Archbishop.
