SHIPTON, a chapelry, in the parish of Market-Weighton, union of Pocklington, Holme-Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, E. riding of York, 1¼ mile (N. W. by W.) from Market-Weighton; containing 322 inhabitants.
This township, which has a pleasant village, comprises by computation 1570 acres of land.
The chapel is a handsome structure consisting of a nave, chancel, aisles, and embattled tower. The tithes were commuted for land in 1773.
There is a place of worship for Primitive Methodists.
