Parish Registers

Marriages at Salisbury St Edmund 1559 to 1837

Note.—The Register of this important parish before 1 July 1837 consists of fourteen volumes.

Volume I commences in January 1559-60, and ends in May 1653. There is a gap between the years 1584 and 1587, and after 7 May 1604 the dates are wanting or imperfect until 30 July 1606; with this exception the volume appears to be complete.

Volume II begins in September 1653 and ends with the year 1699.

Volume III, which, like the two preceding volumes, contains entries of Baptisms and Burials as well as Marriages, begins in January 1699-1700, and ends for all entries in December 1767; but the Marriage entries from 10 June 1754 are printed here as in Volume IV.

Volume IV contains entries of Marriages only, in the form then adopted, already entered in Volume III, from 26 May 1754 to 29 June 1767.

Volume V has the entries of Marriages from 25 July 1767 (repeating the last entries in Volume III) until 7 Nov. 1779.

Volume VI begins on 9 December 1779 and ends on 2 August 1802.

Volume VII begins on 16 August 1802 and ends on 31 December 1812.

Volume VIII contains entries of Baptisms and Burials only. There is a duplicate book of part of it with stamped entries of Baptisms and Burials ; and another duplicate with similar entries of Marriages between October 1783 and July 1794.

Volume IX contains the Marriages from 8 February 1813 to 17 September 1832; and

Volume X those from the same date, 17 September 1832, to the end of June 1837.

Volumes XI-XIV contain Baptisms and Burials only.

These transcripts, down to the end of 1812, where made by the Rev. A. R. Thurlow while he was curate at this church ; and from that date to the end of June 1837 by Mr. James Parsons, parish clerk of St. Edmund’s. They have been collated with the Registers by Mr. T. H. Baker, and are printed with the permission of the Rev. Canon Morrice, Rector of St. Edmund’s.
