The Rev. Rich. Scott, Master of Arts, of Brase-nose College, Oxford, Chaplain in Ordinary to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, was instituted to the Vicarage of Condover the 17th day of July, 1807, on the Presentation of Edward William Smythe Pemberton, of Longnor in the county of Salop, Esquire.
Memorandum that on Sept. 29, Ano. Domi. 1769, part of the Vicarage Garden was by the Consent of Rev. Roger Barnston, Vicar of this Church, taken into Possession by Nicholas Smyth, Esqr., in Order to enlarge his own, for w’ch after the Rate of One Pound, & ten Shillings pr. Ann: I received on Feb. the 22nd, 1773, four pound and ten Shillings. Also at the same time two Guineas for Easter Dues.
(This Memorandum and Terrier are in the writing of the Rev. Richard Podmore).
A terrier of the Glebe Land & Tythes belonging to the Vicar’ge of Condover.
Imprimis. – The Glebe of this Vicarige is about eight Strike sowing of Rye.
The Buildings upon it are about four Bays besides a small Barn or Stable; two Small Gardens.
The Tythes consist principally of Wool & Lamb with all other Vicarial Tythes & Home-Closes which pay the Annual Product of them. One Township called Dorrington pays Tythe Hay. One Township called Lythwood, formerly said to
Belong to a Forrest, pays nothing but Easter Offerings.
All the Parish (except this Lythwood) pay Mortuaries according to the Statute.
Mortuaries are also paid from the Parishes of Frodsley and Stapleton.
And from this last there is payd for two Home-Closes: from the One now in Possession of Widow Allen, One shilling by the Year, from the other now in Possession of Widdw. Olivers One Shilling & eight Pence by the Year. ,
The Township of Longnor has a private Chapel. It pays the great Tythes to the Impropriatrix but pays no Vicarial Tythes to the Vicar. Neether do they Communicate at their Parish Church on any of the great Festivals, nor at any other Time. For What Reason we know not.
N. B. – A Copy of the above was delivered into Court September the 11th, 1745, by
Thos. Easthope, the Elder,
James Hartshorn, the younger
Chur.Ward’ns
Upon failure of Issue of Male in the Family of the Owens, Patrons of this Vicarige there fell to the Vicar an Annuity of 69l ., payable out of the Estate of Berrington, Esqr., but the Land Tax & Bread Weekly to the Poor deducted from it reduces it to 6ol . pr. Annum.
[Written, apparently, by the Rev. Osborne Wight, but afterwards crossed out]
This is not true, as there is no Bread paid by the Vicar, but Mr. Barnston freely gave £2 10s. annually, & the statem’t of the land Tax is wrong also.
Osborne Wight, Vicar.
