Parish History
Kelly’s Directory of Sussex 1915
St. Michael’s parish church, in the High street, partly rebuilt in 1755, is of flint and stone, in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower, with spire, containing 2 bells: there is a monument to Sir Nicholas Pelham knt. M.P. d. 1560, and two brasses : the church was restored and enlarged in 1885, at a cost of £3,060 : since 1896 the
church has been decorated at a further cost of £1,300, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the
year 1521. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £175, with residence, in the gift of the Society for the Maintenance of the Faith, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Robert Henry Belcher M.A., LL.D. fellow of King’s College, London, and surrogate. The parish club adjoins the church, and has a tower with a projecting clock.
