WROCKWARDINE-WOOD, a township in Wrockwardine parish, and a chapelry partly also in Eyton-upon-the-Wild-Moors parish, Salop. The township lies 1 mile N of Oakengates r. station, and 3½ E of Wellington; and has a post-office under Wellington, Salop. Acres, 502. Pop. in 1851, 2,099; in 1861, 3,317.

A Topographical Dictionary of England 1848

WROCKWARDINE-WOOD, a township and an ecclesiastical parish, in the civil parish of Wrockwardine, union of Wellington, Wellington division of the hundred of South Bradford, N. division of Salop; containing 1698 inhabitants. This township comprises 502a. 17p., of which nearly one-half is arable, and the remainder meadow and pasture; the substratum abounds both with coal and ironstone, and some mines are in operation. A branch of the Shrewsbury canal passes through the township. The church was erected at an expense of £1600, by subscription, aided by grants from the Incorporated Society, and was consecrated on the 3rd of August, 1833; it is a neat structure in the Grecian style, with a tower, and contains 610 sittings, of which 436 are free. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of the Crown; net income, £81.

Wrockwardine Wood became and ecclesiastical parish distinct from Wrockwardine in 1847; is a township in the civil parish of Wrockwardine, from which place it is distant 5 miles.  The church of the Holy Trinity is a brick building, erected in 1833.  The living is a rectory, having been made such by the purchase of the great tithes, which were formerly in the possession of the Orleton family, augmented to about £200 yearly, with residence and six acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor.  There is a National school for boys and girls.  There are three chapels for the Methodists and Primitive Methodists.  The minerals are ironstone and coal.  The collieries are principally the property of the Duke of Sutherland, and are held on lease by the Lilleshall Company.  The population in 1861 of the district was 3,637, of the township 3,317; the acreage is 502.

The Trench is a straggling hamlet, principally in the township of Wrockwardine Wood but also extending into Eyton-on-the-Weald Moors; it is nearly a mile from the former place.
