ABBOTS-BROMLEY, a town of England, in Staffordshire, 10 miles E. from Stafford. Post town, Rugeley. It has a money Ord. off. Pop. 1089.

ABBOTS-BROMLEY, or Bromley-Abbots, a small town, a parish, and a subdistrict in the district of Uttoxeter, Stafford. The town stands near the river Blythe, 6 miles NNE of Rugeley r. station, and 12 E of Stafford. It has a post-office under Rugeley; and is a polling-place. It was formerly a market-town; and still has fairs on the Tuesday before Midlent, 22 May, and 4 Sept. It consists chiefly of a long street, containing some good houses and an ancient market cross. The parish includes also the liberty of Bromley-Hurst and the lordship of Bagots-Bromley. Acres, 9,391. Real property, £4,409. Pop., 1,538. Houses, 350. Blithfield, the seat of Lord Bagot, stands 2½ miles W of the town. A Benedictine Abbey was founded at Blithbury, on the Blythe, by Hugh Malveysin, in the reign of Henry I. or of Stephen; and passed, at the dissolution, to the Chadwick family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield. Value, £235. Patron, the Marquis of Anglesey. The church is an ancient structure, in various styles, chiefly later English; but has been modernized. There is an Independent chapel. There are also a free school, a national school, and other charities with £193 a year. Mrs. Cooper, who saw her descendants to the sixth generation, lived at Abbots-Bromley.-The subdistrict comprises three parishes and part of a fourth. Acres, 17,355. Pop., 2,976. Houses, 648.

Abbots Bromley. The hobby-horse dance, an ancient custom, was observed here until the civil war. Ten or Twelve of the dancers carried, on their shoulders, deers’ heads, painted with the arms of Paget, Bagot, and Welles, to whom the chief property of the town belonged. The horns yet hang up in the church, but the custom is now discontinued. The parish includes Bromley, Bagot’s Liberty, and Bromley Hurst township. Bagot’s park is the deer-park of Lord Bagot, whose seat is at Blithefield.
Market, Tuesday – Fairs, Tuesday before Mid-lent Sunday, May 22, September 4, for horses and horned cattle.

A Topographical Dictionary of the United Kingdom 1808
Abbott’s-Bromley, or Paget’s-Bromley, a parish in the hundred of South Pirehill, Stafford, 6 miles from Stafford, and 129 from London, contains 180 houses and 808 inhabitants; and is a vicarage, value 5l. 1s. 8d. After the dissolution of the monasteries, it was given to Lord Paget, from whom it has generally been named.

Complete Pocket Gazetteer of England and Wales 1807
Abbots Bromley, (Staff.) a market town, so called from its abbey; of which, however, no vestige now remains. It consists chiefly of one street, and the houses are, in general, neat and well built. Here are a large church, a free grammar school founded in 1603, an alms house for 6 old men, and a town hall, wherein are annually held the court-leet and court-baron of the earl of Uxbridge, who is lord of the manor, and patron of the church. This town is 13 miles dist. from Stafford, and 129 miles 6 f. from London.
Market day and Fairs. The market is held on Tuesday; and there are 3 annual fairs, viz. Tue. after Midlent Sun. May 22, and Sept. 4, for horses, cows, sheep, pigs, &c.
Post. The post goes out every Sun. Tues. Wed. and Fri. morn, at 6 o’clock, and comes in at 6 in the evening of those days.
Inns, Gentlemen’s Seats &c. The principal inn is the Crown and Goat’s Head, or Bagot’s Arms. In the vicinity is Blythfield Hall, seat of Lord Bagot

Bromley, Bagots, a lordship, in the parish of Abbot’s-Bromley, union of Uttoxeter S division of the hundred of Pirehill, N division of the county of Stafford, 1 ½ mile (NW) from Abbot’s-Bromley. This place derives its distinguishing name from the noble family of Bagot, to which it has belonged since the Conquest; and Sir William Bagot, Bart., was advanced to the peerage, on the 17th of Oct., 1780, by the title of Baron Bagot, of Bagots-Bromley.
