Parish History

St. Sepulchre Parish was ecclesiastically one parish, located partly in Middlesex, but chiefly in London. For civil purposes it was divided in two parishes, each with the same name, but one in London and one in Middlesex. In 1889 the Middlesex civil parish was transferred entirely to London County. (see Young’s) A number of names have been used, including St. Sepulchre Newgate or St. Sepulchre without Newgate, St. Sepulchre Holborn, St. Edmund Sepulcher, St. Edmund without Newgate, St. Sepulcher in the Bailey without Newgate, St. Sepulchre in Smithfield, Holy Sepulchre without Newgate, and most recently as a result of ecclesiastical unions, the church parish has become St. Sepulchre Viaduct with Christ Church Greyfriars and St. Leonard Foster Lane1.
