ASHFORDBY, or Asfordby, a parish in Melton-Mowbray district, Leicester; on the Midland railway and the river Wreak, 3 miles W of Melton-Mowbray. It has a station on the railway, and a post-office under Melton-Mowbray. Acres, 1,210. Real property, £3,902. Pop., 485. Houses, 125. The property is much sub-divided. Stocking-making is carried on. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £455. Patron, the Rev. Frederick G. Burnaby. The church was recently repaired, and has a tower and spire. There are chapels for Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, and charities £8.

A Topographical Dictionary of England 1848

ASHFORDBY, or Asfordby (All Saints), a parish, in the union of Melton-Mowbray, hundred of East Goscote, N. division of the county of Leicester, 3 miles (W.) from Melton-Mowbray; containing 482 inhabitants. It comprises by measurement 1800 acres, of which two-thirds are grazing, and one-third arable land; and is situated on the river Wreak, which communicates with the Leicester and Melton-Mowbray navigation, and over which is a bridge. The living is a rectory, valued in the king’s books at £15. 11. 8., and in the patronage of the Rev. A. Burnaby, the present incumbent, and his two sisters, with a net income of £455: the tithes were commuted for land in 1761, under an inclosure act.

Asfordby Directory of Leicestershire 1846

ASFORDBY, a pleasant village, consisting chiefly of one street, with several neat houses, on the north side of the navigable river Wreak, 3 miles W of Melton Mowbray, has in its parish 482 souls and 1467 acres of land, generally having a clayey soil and a flat surface.

The National School was built by the rector, in 1843, at the cost of £300; and for teaching six poor boys, the master has the dividends of £172 0s 10d., three per cent consols, purchased with £100 left by Morris Cam, in 1769. The poor have the interest of £40,left by one Humberstone; and of £20, left by the Rev Andrew Burnaby, in 1776.

The Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists have small chapels here, the latter built in 1842.
