Saint George is a long straggling parish, 2½ miles north-east of Bristol, in the diocese of Bristol, in Barton Regis hundred and Clifton union, on the London road, in Bristol county court district.

It consists of the hamlets of Two Mile Hill, Upper and Lower Eastons, and White-hall.

The church of St. George is a neat stone edifice, and has a square embattled tower containing 2 bells; the interior, as also the porch on the north side, is in the Gothic style, with sittings for 910 persons, 645 of which are free; it has a chancel, nave, and two aisles; also a neat organ. The living is a vicarage, with 42 acres of glebe land and parsonage-house; the Rev. Thomas Nattle Grigg, B.A, is the vicar and patron. There are Wesleyan, Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels, and two handsome National schools, newly built, for boys, girls, and infants.

There are many market gardens, which supply the Bristol market, abundantly. Several collieries are in this neighbourhood. The soil is light and very rich. There is a county police station, with one sergeant and four constables. The pin manufactory of Messrs. Lambert affords employment to about 200 hands. There are a few small charities for the poor of the parish. The population in 1861 was 10,761; the area is 1,831 acres.

Upper and Lower Eastons are hamlets of St. George, one mile west. Here is St. Mark’s church, a neat stone-built edifice in the Norman style of architecture, with square tower and 2 bells; it has nave and chancel, also a large stained-glass window. There are seats for about 420, all but 72 being free. The living is valued at £150 per annum; the Rev. Nathaniel Heywood, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, is the incumbent. There are National schools for boys and girls. Easton forms an ecclesiastical district, partly in St. George’s and partly in Stapleton parish, with a population of 2,939.

Two Mile Hill, 1 mile north, is a long straggling hamlet, thickly peopled. The church of St. Michael was erected in 1855; the Rev. William Hood Sage, M.A., of Trinity College, Oxford, is the incumbent. Here are National and Infant schools. There are Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. This is an ecclesiastical district in St. George’s township, with a population of 3,622.
