Downend originally a chapelry of Mangotsfield Ancient Parish in Gloucestershire was created a separate Ecclesiastical Parish in 1874. In 1924 the ecclesiastical boundaries of Downend Ecclesiastical Parish were altered with the creation of Soundwell Ecclesiastical Parish.
