FRYERNING (St. Mary), a parish, in the union and hundred of Chelmsford, S. division of Essex, 1 mile (N. W. by W.) from Ingatestone; containing 807 inhabitants.
This parish, which derives its name from having belonged to the friars of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, is distinguished for the luxuriance of its meadows and pasture-lands; and the surrounding district abounds with picturesque and varied scenery.
The manor, after the suppression of monasteries, was purchased by Dorothy, widow of Nicholas Wadham, founder of Wadham College, Oxford; who completed the foundation which her husband had commenced.
The living is a rectory, valued in the king’s books at £9, and in the patronage of the College: the tithe rentcharge is £385. The church is ancient, with a massive tower of brick.
