BISHOP AUCKLAND is a market and union town, township, chapelry, polling place for the Southern division of the county, and head of a county court district, 260 miles from London, 25 south from Newcastle on Tyne, 10 from Durham, 12 north from Darlington, and 62 north from York, in the parish of Auckland St Andrew, north west division of Darlington ward, northern division of Darlington, rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham.

The North Eastern railway has a station here. Auckland is governed by a local board of health. The county magistrates sittings are held at the Justice room every Monday. The police form part of the general force for the county. The town is paved, lighted with gas, and supplied with water, it is situated on a high hill, washed on the north by the river Wear, and on the south east by the Gaunless, and occupies a healthy position at the confluence of that stream with the Wear, which is here crossed by the high level railway bridge. The views are extensive.

The ecclesiastical parish of St Peter was formed in the year 1872; the church a fine stone building situated in Princes street, was built in 1875, at a of £7,000; it consists of nave, aisles and apse, and will seat 550 persons. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham the Crown alternately, and held by the Rev Darnell Croudace, B.A. of University College, Durham.

King James Free Grammar school was founded by Royal charter in 1605, on the petition of Dame Ann Swyftę, for the education of boys in Notts Auckland or Bishop Auckland.

There is also a school endowed by the late Bishop Barrington for boys, erected in the Market place in 1810; number of boys, nearly 300; 30 free and partially clothed by the trustees of the late Bishop Crewe; a National school for girls and infants, situated in the Southchurch road; the Society of Friends have a school in South terrace, founded by the late Edward Walton, a member of that body, and there are also Catholic and Wesleyan day schools.

Here is a Catholic chapel, a Presbyterian church and a United Methodist Free church; also places of worship for Baptists, Wesleyan Methodists, Wesleyan Association, Primitive and Congregational, and a meeting house for the Society of Friends.

The Alms houses in Silver street, founded by Bishop Cosin, are for four poor men and women, who receive about £10 per year from property situated in the town, besides a rent charge upon an estate in Allertonshire; also £8 annually from Lord Crewe’s trustees, and £20 from Bishop Barrington’s charities; the head-houses were enlarged by Bishop Maltby in the year 1845.

The trade is in coal and iron’ in the neighbourhood are a number of coal mines, employing a large number of the population. There are a mechanics institute, and musical, and floral and horticultural, and agricultural societies.

The Temperance hall in Victoria street was opened in the year 1877; it is a fine stone building, and will seat about 600 people; it was erected by public subscription at a cost of £4,000, and is principally used for public entertainments.

The Bishop Auckland Times and Herald published in this town every Friday morning.

Here are the head quarters of the 4th Durham Rifle Volunteers, commanded by Captain V Hutchinson.

There are two banks, viz J Backhouse & Co and the National and Provincial; the former have a handsome building in the Marketplace.

The market is held on Thursday, and is well attended; and there are two fairs in March and Octobe,r for cattle and horses; also four statute or hiring days for servants, held on the two Thursdays next before May 13th and before November 13th.

The township contains 1,919 acres; rateable value, £36,820 the population of the town in 1861, was 6,480, and of the township, 7,279; and in 1871 was 10,112.

POLLARD’S LANE township is mostly included with this town; it has an area or 458 acres; rateable value, £3,499; and population in 1871, of 583.

Bishop Auckland History

Bishop Auckland Comprehensive Gazetteer of England and Wales 1895

Bishop-Auckland, a market town, a township, and a chapelry in Durham. The town stands on an eminence about 140 feet high, between the rivers Wear and Gaunless, near their point of confluence, and adjacent to the Weardale railway, 10¾ miles NNW of Darlington.

It took its name from the vicinity of the Bishop of Durham’s palace, conjoined with ancient abundance of oak woods, and was formerly a borough by prescription. It has pleasant environs, is well built and neat, and has a head post, money order, and telegraph office, a station on the N.E.R., three banks, a spacious town-hall, three churches, a grammar school, two other endowed schools, an orphanage, a workhouse, almshouses, a fever hospital, a theatre, temperance hall, masonic hall, and a mechanics’ institute, also the Light-foot Institute, erected by Bishop Lightfoot. It is a seat of petty sessions, and publishes one weekly newspaper.

The town-hall stands in the centre of the town, adjoining the church. It was built in 1862 at a cost of about £8500; has a groined principal entrance, surmounted by a neat stone balcony; is crowned by angle-roofs with iron pallisading, and with a spire 100 feet high, and contains a large hall, and offices for the Board of Health.

The Church of St Anne is modern, and is attached to the vicarage of Auckland-St-Andrew. The Church of St Peter, built in 1875 at a cost of £7000, is a fine stone building in the Gothic style. The living is a vicarage; net value, £265, alternately in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and the Crown. There are Baptist, Roman Catholic, Congregational, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels, and a Friends’ meeting-house.

The grammar school was founded by James I., and has £45 from endowment; and one of the other endowed schools was founded by Bishop Barrington in 1810, and provides free education and part clothes for thirty boys. The Episcopal palace stands on the NE side of the town, in a fine park of 800 acres, on the river Gaunless, with charming views. It was built by Bishop Cosins on the site of a previous one by Bishop Beck; underwent restoration and extension, with fine entrance Gothic gateway and screen, by Bishop Barrington, after designs by Wyatt, and contains several valuable old paintings by the Italian masters.

In ancient times the prelates had castles at Durham, Stockton, Craike, and Norham. Of all these stately palaces Auckland is the only remaining residence. Attached to the castle is the Bishop’s Chapel, the whole of the floor of which is of chequered marble. It is divided into a nave and side aisles by two ranges of clustered marble pillars 16 feet high, also contains a vault containing the remains of various bishops—the last being Bishop Lightfoot. Newton-Cap Bridge, in the vicinity, over the river Wear, was built in 1390, and has two arches, the one circular and 101 feet in span, the other pointed and 91 feet in span.

A weekly market is held in the town on Thursday, and fairs in March, and on the Thursday before 11 October; also statute or hiring fairs for servants in May and November. Area of the urban sanitary district, 692 acres; population, 10,527. Area of Bishop-Auckland and Pollards Lands, 2587 acres; population, 11,765. Coal and iron are worked extensively, and afford employment to a large number of the inhabitants.

Bishop-Auckland Parliamentary Division of Durham was formed under the Redistribution of Seats Act of 1885, and returns one member to the House of Commons. Population, 61,833. The division includes the following:- Darlington Ward (Bishop-Auckland Division, part of), Auckland (Bishop), Auckland (St Andrew), Binchester, Byers Green, Chilton, Coundon, Coundon Grange, Eldon, Escomb, Helmington Row, Hunwick and Helmington, Merrington, Middlestone, Middridge, Middridge Grange, Newfield, Newton Cap, Old Park, Pollards Lands, Shildon, Thickley (East), Westerton, Whitworte, Windlestone.

BISHOP-AUCKLAND, a town, a township, and a subdistrict, in the district of Auckland, Durham. The town stands on an eminence about 140 feet high, between the rivers Wear and Gaunless, near their point of confluence, and adjacent to the Weardale railway, 10¾ miles NNW of Darlington.

It took its name from the vicinity of the Bishop of Durham’s palace, conjoined with ancient abundance of oak woods; and it was formerly a borough by prescription. It has pleasant environs; and is well-built and neat. It has a post office under Darlington, a railway station, two banking offices, two chief inns, a spacious town hall, a church, seven non-established chapels, a grammar school, two other endowed schools, a workhouse, and alms-houses; is a seat of petty sessions and a polling-place; and publishes two weekly newspapers.

The town hall stands in the centre of the town, adjoining the church; was built in 1862, at a cost of about £8,500; has a groined principal entrance, surmounted by a neat stone balcony; is crowned by angle-roofs with iron pallisading, and with a spire 100 feet high; and contains a large music-hall, and offices for the Board of Health.

The church is modern, and ranks as a chapel to the charge of Auckland-St. Andrew. A Wesleyan chapel, in modified Italian style, was built in 1866. The other non-established chapels are for Independents, Presbyterians, Quakers, two Methodist bodies, and Roman Catholics. The grammar school was founded by James I., and has £38 from endowment; and one of the other endowed schools was founded by Bishop Barrington, and has £367.

The episcopal palace stands on the NE side of the town, in a fine park of 800 acres, on the river Gaunless, with charming views; was built by Bishop Cousins, on the site of a previous one by Bishop Beck; underwent restoration and extension, with fine entrance Gothic gateway and screen, by Bishop Barrington, after designs by Wyatt; and contains several valuable old paintings, by the Italian masters. Newtoncap bridge, in the vicinity, over the river Wear, was built in 1390, and has two arches, the one circular and 101 feet in span, the other pointed and 91 feet in span.

Bishop Auckland A Topographical Dictionary of England 1848

AUCKLAND, BISHOP, a market-town and chapelry, in the parish of St. Andrew, union of Auckland, N. W. division of Darlington ward, S. division of the county of Durham, 10½ miles (S. W.) from Durham, and 252 (N. by W.) from London; containing 3776 inhabitants.

This place, in common with others in the immediate vicinity, derives its name from the great number of oak-trees that formerly grew in the neighbourhood; and its prefix from a palace, in which the bishops of the diocese, who are lords of the manor, occasionally reside.

The town, which is in the centre of the parish, is pleasantly situated on a considerable eminence, near the confluence of the rivers Gaunless and Wear, in a fertile district abounding with coal and limestone, and remarkable for the salubrity of the air. The streets are badly paved; the houses are well built, and the inhabitants are plentifully supplied with water.

The palace, originally erected in the reign of Edward I. by Bishop Anthony Beck, and subsequently enlarged, was much injured by Sir Arthur Haslerigg, to whom it was sold by the Parliamentary Commissioners; but after the Restoration it was repaired by Bishop Cosin: it stands in a beautiful park to the north-east of the town, and is a spacious structure, surrounded with plantations and pleasure-grounds watered by the Gaunless. The chapel attached to the palace is a fine edifice in the early and decorated styles, built originally by Bishop Beck, and repaired about 1660 by Bishop Cosin, whose remains are deposited in it.

The market is on Thursday; the fairs are in March and October, but on no fixed day.

The Bishop-Auckland and Weardale railway, constructed chiefly for the conveyance of coal, and a few passengers, branches off from the Stockton and Darlington railway at Shildon, and passes near the town; it takes a course of eight miles, and terminates by a short branch in the township of Crook. It passes over numerous embankments and bridges in its progress, and through several tunnels, and various roads are carried over it: the embankment at Holdforth alone cost £11,000, and the line was completed at an expense of £96,000, of which £72,000 were raised in original shares, and the remainder by loan. In 1846 an act was passed for a line to the Lancaster and Carlisle railway in Westmorland.

The county magistrates hold petty sessions monthly; and courts leet and baron are held annually, at the former of which a bailiff and other officers are appointed. The powers of the county debt court of Bishop-Auckland, established in 1847, extend over the registration-district of Auckland.

The chapel, dedicated to St. Anne, is small, and very inadequate to the purposes for which it was designed. There are places of worship for the Society of Friends, Independents, and Wesleyans.

The free grammar school was founded by James I., and is endowed with land, a house and garden for the master, and a rent-charge, producing an income of about £60 per annum; the management is vested in twelve governors, who are a body corporate, and have a common seal: the schoolroom, over which is St. Anne’s chapel, was rebuilt in 1783.

A school for twenty boys was founded by Mr. Walton, in 1772.

A central school on Dr. Bell’s system, for 200 children, was established in 1810, by Bishop Barrington, who also founded a school of industry for girls, in 1815.

Alms houses for two men and two women were founded and endowed by Bishop Cosin, in the reign of Charles II.; the inmates are clothed every third year, and receive an allowance of about £15 per annum each.
