CERNE-NETHER, a parish in Dorchester district, Dorset; on the river Cerne, 4¾ miles E of Maiden-Newton r. station, and 5½ N by W of Dorchester. Post Town, Cerne, under Dorchester. Acres, 845. Real property, with Godmanstone, £2,204. Pop., 95. Houses, 16. The property is all in one estate. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury. Value, £60. Patron, R. B. Sheridan, Esq. The church is small but neat; and has an ivy-clad tower.

CERNE, NETHER, a parish, in the union of Dorchester and Cerne, hundred of Cerne, Totcombe, and Modbury, Cerne division of Dorset, 5¾ miles (N. N. W.) from Dorchester; containing 71 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy; net income, £60; patrons, the Sheridan family.

Note : — For Nether Cerne, there exists a Register Volume measuring 8½ inches in length, and 6½ inches in width. It includes the period 1693 to 1812, but no marriages are entered after 1744; other Nether Cerne marriages must be searched for in the Registers of Godmanstone. These marriages have been extracted by Mrs. Cockcraft, of Chickerell, late Miss Gundry, by permission of the Rev. W. R. Pope, Rector of Godmanstone.
