BREDY (Long), a parish in Dorchester district, Dorset; on the downs, near the source of the Bredy stream, 4¾ miles SW of Grimstone and Frampton r. station, and 8 W of Dorchester. It includes the hamlet of Upper Kingston; and its Post Town is Little Bredy under Dorchester. Acres, 2,117. Real property, £3,067. Pop., 250. Houses, 55. The property is divided among a few. The living is a rectory, united with the p. curacy of Little Bredy, in the diocese of Salisbury. Value, £625. Patron, R. Williams, Esq. The church is good. Charities, £8.

LONG BREDY is an extensive parish in the petty sessional division of Dorchester, hundred of Eggerton, Dorchester union and county court district, diocese of Salisbury, archdeaconry of Dorset and rural deanery of Bridport first portion: the village of Long Bredy is situated 8 miles west from Dorchester, 9 east from Bridport and 6 south west from Grinston station on the Great Western railway.
The church of St Peter is of stone, consisting of chancel and nave, north and south transept, with a tower, and was thoroughly repaired in 1863. The register dates from the year 1628. The living is a rectory with Little Bredy annexed, tithe rent charge £460 and 75 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Robert Williams esq. and held by the Rev Henry Pigou MA of Pembroke College Cambridge. The charities amount to £9 10s yearly.
There are numerous barrows in the vicinity. The soil is light subsoil chalk. The chief crops are corn and some land in pasture. The area is 2,117 acres; rateable value 2,840; the parish contained in 1871 a population of 260.
