WARKLEIGH (St. John), a parish, in the union and hundred of South Molton, South Molton and N. divisions of Devon, 5½ miles (W. S. W.) from South Molton; containing 291 inhabitants.
It is bounded on the west by the river Taw, and on the east by the Mole; and comprises 2000 acres by computation.
The living is a rectory, valued in the king’s books at £14. 4. 7., and in the gift of James Gould, Esq.: the tithes have been commuted for £230; the glebe consists of about 22 acres. The church is an ancient cruciform structure in the early English style, and contains a piscina and a beautifully-carved oak screen.
