MARKYATE STREET is a village, 4 miles south west from Dunstable, on the road from London to Birmingham, partly in the hundred of Manshead, county of Bedford, and partly in the hundred of Dacorum, county of Hertford, and partly in the parish of Caddington.
Divine service is held in the chapel of St John the Evangelist, a small unpretending building, which is part of the property of the owner of Markyate Cell; the Rev Francis William Adey, B.A., of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, a relative of the present owner, officiating.
Here is an endowed Grammar school, called Coppin’s Charity; the endowment, about £60 per annum, is in the hands of trustees appointed by the Charity Commissioners. Here are a Wesleyan chapel, a Baptist chapel, and one for Particular Baptists, The straw manufacture has greatly increased of late years.
Markyate Cell is the residence of Daniel Goodson Adey, Esq., J.P., who is the lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s, Daniel Goodson Adey, Esq., J.P., and Mrs Macnamara. The soil is strong clay; subsoil chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, &c. The population in 1861 was 1,380.
