Directory Transcriptions

Stanley (Leonard Stanley) Universal British Directory 1791

Stanley St. Leonard, or Leonard’s Stanley, is a small inconsiderable town, four miles south-west from Stroud, six north-east from Dursley, eleven south from Gloucester, and a hundred and five from London.  It had its name from the priory dedicated to that saint, of which some ruins are yet remaining.

The town had a charter granted by King Edward II for a market on Saturday, and two annual fairs, on the 15th of July and 6th of November.  This charter was renewed by King James I but the market is totally disused, and the fairs nearly so.  The town was nearly consumed by a dreadful fire in the reign of James II from which calamity it has never recovered.

The manor was formerly a part of the immense inheritance of the noble family of Berkeley, and is now the property of Robert Sandford, Esq.  A considerable cloth-manufactory is carried on in this parish, very much to the credit and personal interest of the manufacturers.  The parish is not very large, and consequently not very populous. – Here is a charity-school.

King’s Stanley, which is the adjoining parish, was formerly the residence of one of the Mercian Kings, and was formerly a borough, endowed with great privileges, of which not a vestige remains.  The clothing trade flourishes in the several adjoining parishes, many of which are very populous.
There is no regular carrier.  Stroud is the post-town. – See vol. ii p.459 –
The following are the principal inhabitants:

Gentry, &c.

Ducie Right Hon. Lord. Spring-park
Hill – , Esq. Stonehouse
Skipp – , Esq. Grange
