Directories

Minsterworth Kellys Gloucestershire Directory 1856

Minsterworth, anciently called Mortune, is a township, parish and straggling village, 4 miles south-west from Gloucester, being intersected by the turnpike road leading to Newnham and Chepstow, and is in the Westbury Union, in the Duchy of Lancaster, West Gloucestershire, in the archdeaconry of Gloucester and Bristol, and in the deanery of the Forest and bishopric of Gloucester and Bristol.

The living is a vicarage, value £125; patron, Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol. The church of St. Peter consists of a nave and aisle of equal length, with a chancel to each. The tower is low and unembattled; and it is said that a steeple which stood upon it was destroyed by lightening about the year 1702. The Rev. Arthur Nettleship, B.A., is the incumbent.

The acreage of this parish is 1,819, which is equally applied to pasture, arable, and meadow. The population, in 1851, was 494; and the number of acres 1,938. The soil, in general, is deep, and very productive, well adapted to the growth of apples for making cider, to which the residents appear to give their particular attention. The rateable value of this parish is £4,054.

Dinney House is the seat of William Viner Ellis, Esq.; Hygrove, of Charles Barrow Evans, Esq., a minor; Severn Bank, of A. H. Phillpotts, Esq. Murcott and Tillup are farms.
