RISSINGTON (Great), a parish, with a village, in Stow-on-the-Wold district, Gloucester; between the river Windrush and the boundary with Gloucester, 3¼ miles SSE of Bourton-on-the-Water r. station, and 5 NW of Burford. Post-town, Burford, under Faringdon. Acres, 2,420. Real property, £3,896. Pop., 499. Houses, 112.

The manor belongs to Lord Dynevor. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. Value, £800. Patron, Lord Dynevor.

The church is variously Norman, early English, decorated, and perpendicular.

There are a slightly endowed national school, and charities £12.

A Topographical Dictionary of England 1848

RISSINGTON, GREAT (St. John the Baptist), a parish, in the union of Stow-on-the-Wold, Lower division of the hundred of Slaughter, E. division of the county of Gloucester, 5¾ miles (S.) from Stow; containing 483 inhabitants.

It comprises by computation 2500 acres. The surface is in some parts hilly, with a soil light and stony; but the lower grounds, through which the Windrush flows, are clayey and gravelly.

The living is a rectory, valued in the king’s books at £22. 0. 5.; net income, £647; patron, Lord Dynevor. The tithes were commuted for land in 1812; the glebe altogether contains 500 acres.

Marriages at Great Rissington 1538 to 1913

Vol. I consists of parchment leaves, front cover complete, back cover half torn off; size of each leaf 14 in. by 14 in. Writing on outer cover almost illegible, and some names inside quite unreadable. Thirty-eight leaves in register, slit in leaf 7, but no reading missing. Piece missing in leaf 14; piece 8 in. by 6 in. cut out of leaf 26. Between leaves 20 and 21, one leaf is entirely cut out, and also between leaves 26 and 27, and 28 and 29; while between leaves 34 and 25 two leaves have disappeared. Of leaf 35 a piece 6 in. by 14in. cut away. The last leaf of all is missing. Total, six leaves missing.

This volume begins with Christenings from 1538 to 1746 complete; then follow Marriages from 1538 to 1744 complete, except for leaves named; then Burials from 1538 to 1747 complete, except for leaves named.

Vol. II of parchment leaves, bound in parchment boards, consists of twenty-four leaves, each 14 in. by 8 in., complete, except for three leaves cut out after leaf 14, five leaves cut out at the end, and three leaves cut out after leaf 16 – eleven leaves missing. At commencement of volume there are two plain fly-leaves.

The first entries are Christenings from 1747 to 1812; then two pages of Burials, from 1805 continued till 1812, upside down; then Burials, 1747 to 1805; followed by Marriages, 1747 to 1754.

Vol. III, bound in parchment boards, consists of twenty-three parchment leaves, measuring 8 ½ in. by 13 in., complete and in good order. It contains Marriages from 1754 to 1793.

Vol. IV, contains eleven parchment leaves, 8 ½ in. by 13 in., in a stiff cover. Seven leaves have been cut out at end. This volume contains Marriages from 1794 to 1812.

Vol. V., leaves of paper bound in parchment boards. There are fifty leaves, measuring 16 in. by 10 ½ in., only sixteen of which are written upon. The Marriages are entered on printed forms, six on each leaf. This volume contains Marriages from 1813 to 1836; ninety-one entries.

Vol. VI, in cloth-covered boards, contains one hundred and twenty-five paper leaves; sixty-two used up to date. The Marriages are on printed forms, four on a leaf, and range from 1837 to 1913. One entry missing on leaf 11 and last leaf only half filled.

These Marriages have been abstracted by the Misses Agatha and Rhoda Pratt, and are now printed under their supervision by permission of the Rev. H. Madan Pratt, the present Rector.
