Marriages at Nether Swell 1686 to 1812
Note. – The oldest register is of parchment, in a bad, broken condition, and irregularly kept, owing, probably, to the non-residence of any vicar or curate until the middle of the present century. The lower portion has been burnt nearly half-way across. This has caused a shrivelling of the parchment, and the disappearance of some dates.
The second register covers the period 1742-1812. It is of parchment, in brown calf-binding, and has been kept better, and is in better condition. On the inside of the cover, however, is this memorandum :- “The parish register of Nether (commonly called Lower) Swell, procured with the utmost difficulty, after having been several years without one, by Henry Browne, M.A., Vicar,” etc.
The third volume, a register of marriages only, of parchment, well kept, and issued, according to a printed title-page, pursuant to Act 27 Geo. II. This register, therefore, covers 1763-1812. This transcript has been made by the present vicar, the Rev. David Royce, and is now printed by his permission and under his supervision
