SHRIVENHAM, a village, a parish, a sub-district, and a hundred, in Berks. The village stands near the Wilts and Berks canal, 1 mile N of the Great Western railway, and 5¼ SW of Faringdon; was once a market-town; and has a r. station with telegraph, and a post-office, designated Shrivenham, Berkshire.
The parish includes two tythings and three townships. Acres, 8,430. Real property, £16,888. Pop., 2,258. Houses, 484. The manor, with Beckett House, belongs to Viscount Barrington. S. House is the seat of A. Sartoris, Esq. There are several handsome villas.
The living is a vicarage, with Watchfield chapelry, in the diocese of Oxford. Value, £550. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is later English. The p. curacy of Longcot is a separate benefice. There are a reading and news room, a national school, alms houses with £84 a year, and other charities £24.
The sub-district contains five parishes, and two parts; and is in Faringdon district. Acres, 19,114. Pop., 4,521. Houses, 958.
The hundred contains six parishes, and three parts. Acres, 30,590. Pop., 5,684. Houses, 1,188.

Shrivenham with Beckett, a parish in the hund. of Shrivenham, union of Faringdon, county of Berks; 5 miles south-south-west of Great Faringdon, intersected by the Wilts and Berks canal, and the Great Western railway, which has an intermediate station here 70¾ miles from the Paddington terminus, and 6¼ from the Swindon station.
The parish includes the tything of Bourton, the hamlet of Femham, the chapelry of Longcott, and the township of Watchfield.
Living, a vicarage, formerly in the archd. of Berks and dio. of Salisbury, now in the dio. of Oxford; rated at £20. Tithes commuted in 1789. Patron, the Crown. The church is a large and handsome Gothic structure.
Here are 7 daily and 2 day and Sunday schools. There are 8 alms houses, endowed with £84 per annum.
This was anciently a place of considerable importance, with a market and a fair, both long since discontinued. Acres 8,430. Houses 406. A.P. £12,901. Pop., in 1801, 1,599; in 1831, 2,113. Poor rates, in 1838, £336.

Becket

Becket, a tything in the parish and hund. of Shrivenham, county of Berks; 5½ miles south-west of Farringdon, in the vicinity of the Great Western railway. Soon after the conquest, this manor fell to the Crown, and the manor-house was occasionally made a royal residence. Dr Shute Barrington, late bishop of Durham, was born here in 1731. Pop. returned with the parish.
