ANSTEY, a parish in Tisbury district, Wilts; under Whitesheet hill, 2 miles S by E of Tisbury r. station, and 5 SSE of Hindon. Post Town, Tisbury under Salisbury. Acres, 840. Real property, with Swallowclift, £3,778. Pop., 298. Houses, 59. The property is divided among a few. A preceptory of the Hospitallers was founded here in 1210; and a barn belonging to it still remains. The living is a donative in the diocese of Salisbury. Value, £22. Patron, Lord Arundell. The church is the oldest in the diocese; has an ancient font; and is in tolerable condition. Dr. Richard Zouch, judge of the court of admiralty in the reign of Charles I., was a native.

Living, a donative curacy, not in charge, in the archd. and dio. of Salisbury; gross income £22. Patron, in 1835, Lord Arundell. The chapel is supposed to be the oldest in the diocese.
The hospitallers had a preceptory here, founded in the reign of King John. At the dissolution, its revenues were £81 8s. 5d. Dr Richard Zouch, judge of the court of admiralty in the reign of Charles I., was a native of Anstey. Pop., in 1801, 242 ; in 1831, 348. Houses 67. Acres 840. A. P. £1,840. Poor rates, in 1837, £134.

A Topographical Dictionary of England 1848
ANSTEY (St. James), a parish, in the union of Tisbury, hundred of Dunworth, Hindon and S. divisions of Wilts, 5¼ miles (S. E. by S.) from Hindon; containing 329 inhabitants. It comprises 1000 acres; the surface is hilly in some parts, and the soil chalky and sandy.
The living is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Lord Arundel; net income, £22.
Here was a commandery of the Knights Hospitallers, founded by Walter de Tuberville in the reign of John, and the revenue of which at the Dissolution was £81. 8. 5.; its remains have been coverted into a farmhouse.
Dr. Richard Zouch, an eminent civilian, and judge of the court of admiralty, in the reign of Charles I., was a native of the place.
