Ab-Kettleby, a township and parish in Melton Mowbray Registration District, Leicester. The township lies on an affluent of the river Wreak, at Broughton hill, 2¾ miles N by E of Asfordby r. station, and 3 NW by N of Melton-Mowbray; and has a post-office under Melton-Mowbray. Pop., 224. Houses, 50.

The parish contains also the township of Holwell. Acres, 2,920. Rated property, £1,805. Pop., 371. Houses, 82. The property is sub-divided. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, not reported. Patron, Rev. T. Bingham. The church belonged anciently to Laund priory, was recently restored, and has a tower and spire. There are a Wesleyan chapel, and charities £8.

Ab-Kettleby (St. James), a parish, in the union of Melton-Mowbray, hundred of Framland, N. division of the county of Leicester, 3 miles (N. W. by N.) from Melton Mowbray, on the road to Nottingham; containing, with the hamlet of Holwell, 380 inhabitants.

This parish, situated near the border of Nottinghamshire, comprises 2127 acres, of which 660 are arable, and 1467 pasture. The living is a vicarage, valued in the king’s books at £15. 10. 5., and in the patronage of the Rev. Thomas Bingham: the tithes for the waste grounds inclosed in the parish were commuted for land by an inclosure act in 1761. At Holwell is a chapel of ease. There is a school for children of both sexes, supported by the incumbent.

It contains the townships of Ab-Kettleby and Holwell. Living, a vicarage in the archd. of Leicester and dio. of Lincoln; rated at £15 10s. 5d. Patron, in 1829, the Rev. T. Bingham. Pop. in 1801, 254; in 1831, 331. Houses 70. Acres 2,920. A. P. £1,678. Poor rates, in 1837, £127.

Note. — The whole of the registers of Ab-Kettleby-cum-Holwell previous to 1813 are contained in two volumes, of which the first is a parchment bound book consisting of 75 leaves, the fly-leaf and next 43 leaves measuring 15¼ by 5½ inches, and the remainder of varying length by the same width. The last two leaves are blank.

The whole volume contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1580 to 1812, and of Marriages from 1580 to 1753.

The second volume contains Marriages only, from 1754 to 1812.

These Marriages have been transcribed by the Vicar, the Rev. T. C. Hughes, with the assistance of Mr. T. M. Blagg for the earlier portion, and they are now printed under their joint supervision.

Directory of Leicestershire 1846

AB KETTLEBY is a pleasant village on an eminence, 3 miles NNW of Melton Mowbray, and 15 miles SE of Nottingham; being on the turnpike between the two towns, and on the southern acclivity of the red sandstone hills which bound the vale of Belvoir. Its parish includes also Holwell chapelry, and its township contains 971A 2R 8P of land, and 224 inhabitants.

The Earl of Dysart is lord of the manor, but the soil belongs mostly to H.C. Bingham and Thomas Butler Esqrs., Messrs. Wm. and John Guy, and Bottesford Hospital.

The poor have the following charities, viz., a yearly rent charge of 30s out of the parsonage at Nether Broughton, left by John Neale, in 1606, for distribution in coals; £2 10s a year from 1A 2R 25p allotted at the enclosure in lieu of land purchased with £28 left by John Steele, in 1669, (one third for the poor of Holwell;) 10s a year from the Corporation of Grantham, (half for Holwell,) out of land at Barrowby, Lincolnshire; 6s a year out of the Poor’s Close, in Nether Broughton; 2s 6d out of the poor rates, as interest of £2 10s left by J. Steele; £1 5s a year left by Mrs Stoakes, out of a farm here; and 15s a year out of land at Holwell Mouth, left by Mr Dexter, who also charged the same land with 10s per annum for repairing the spring there.
