The manor belonged to a small Benedictine priory, founded here in the time of Henry I., and annexed to Cerisy abbey in Normandy; was given by Henry VI. to Eton college; and passed to Queen’s college, Oxford, in connexion with St. Julian’s hospital at Southampton. The chapel of the priory still exists, and contains an ancient altar-tomb. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester. Value, £50. Patron, Queen’s College, Oxford. The church has Norman portions, and was restored in 1862. There is a free school.
